Purpose of Position:

The Purchasing Agent within the camping category will manage all merchandise procurement and product mix evaluation activities including, but not limited to; negotiating with vendors to obtain reasonable pricing, quantities, delivery dates, review of sales data, and establishing improved procurement programs. They will assist in optimization of inventory levels while minimizing product stock outs and maintaining high customer service levels.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Determine and manage assortment selection to ensure achievement of sales, inventory turn, and margin goals
  • Analyze and hindsight category performance to develop category strategy and identify future business opportunities
  • Maintain an understanding of national markets and apparel trends impacting current performance and potential future sales
  • Maintain close working relationship with the Demand Planners to ensure forecast accuracy, and systems maintenance in an environment of constantly changing products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional departments on assortment promotions, product launches, and vendor displays
  • Negotiate and administer of purchasing contracts, vendor programs, and advertising co-op programs
  • Identify and resolves potential purchasing problems; follow up to ensure timely and accurate product delivery
  • Build and maintain working relationship with vendor partners
  • Avoid stock outs, manage risk of excess inventory and expediting costs, and communicate with store level personnel on regional needs
  • All other duties as assigned


Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical skills and understanding of retail math
  • Must possess ability to prioritize competing tasks
  • Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office. 
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication. 
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field preferred
  • A minimum 3 years of experience in retail category management, buying, inventory management, replenishment or similar discipline required.

  • The employee may be required to exert up to 75 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include near acuity at 20 inches or less due to computer work
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will experience a moderate noise level (i.e. business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic)

Travel Requirements:

This position requires some travel, up to 25%.
